This work paints a portrait of the wizard Saruman from J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord Of The Rings. This piece show Saruman’s character, but not as a programmatic story. It begins with a fanfare that shows his power and sets up the fantasy soundworld of Middle Earth. The music transitions to a charismatic, wise, but unpredictable melody that captures the essence of his wizarding nature. A brief, quiet percussion effect shows him peering into the palantir, and the following section slowly distorts the first theme more and more until it is completely corrupted, The twelve-tone section is used to display Saruman after he has lost his love for natural things through use of metallic percussion, an industrial groove, phased lines of running minor thirds, and a foreshadowing of the final theme. The piece ends with a restatement of the opening but on much more sinister terms because of the malice and corruption of Saruman. It descends into a new them set as a chorale that passes from the brass to woodwinds and then to the ensemble singing. It ends the piece just as Tolkien ended Saruman—with only the power of his voice.
